INT 295F: Tunisia - History, Politics and Culture
What do you know about the Arab world, North Africa? Is Islam your first thought? Duringthis field study, you will debunk persistent stereotypes, explore different aspects of Tunisia and perceive a vibrant and complex reality. This country may be the smallest country in Northern Africa, but it’s full of culture and history that will enrich your study abroad experience. Once home to Berber tribes, the Carthaginians, Roman soldiers, Andalusian survivors and French colonizers, Tunisia is the perfect place to learn more about the modern Arab society, history and multilingualism. In Tunis, the country’s capital, less than 100 miles south of Europe and the birthplace of the Arab Spring, you will take some culture-focused language class, meet with leaders from the civil society, examine Tunisia’s peaceful transition to democracy. You may also indulge in couscous and fresh seafood, while attending community cooking workshops. Ultimately, this program will challenge you to become global citizens: mindful travelers who practice cultural humility and take every opportunity to build their intercultural knowledge and skills.

- Prerequisites: None but preference given to those who know French and/or Arabic
- Course Requirements: Readings, creation of a travel brochure in response to a specific prompt, mini-presentation, cultural reflections, daily linguistics challenges, and post-program assessment.
- Anticipated Number of Students: 12
- Estimated Program Fee: $3,990
- Program Fee Includes: Roundtrip airfare from Orlando International Airport, tuition, housing, program administration, meals, on-site transportation, on-site activities, emergency insurance.
- Visa: Not required for U.S. citizens.
- Special Notifications: Students should be prepared for substantial walking nd some more strenuous activities. Using stairs is necessary for certain activities or in public areas for transit. Students with sensitivity to seasickness or motion sickness should be prepared.. Please contact International Programs for more information.
