ENV 395F: Belize Field Study
The field study emphasizes the role of wildlife conservation and protected areas as a key component of sustainable development. Belize is a treasure trove of biodiversity and has made significant strides in conservation. Here are some key highlights: Approximately 37 percent of Belize's terrestrial habitats are protected within a network of more than 100 reserves. Belize has also been recognized for its efforts to restore degraded lands and develop an agroforestry system that balances production and environmental conservation. The Maya Forest is one of the largest contiguous blocks of tropical forest north of the Amazon. Belize is also a melting pot of cultures, blending Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, and Mayan influences. Itinerary Highlights: St. Herman’s Cave and Blue Hole National Park; Ancient Maya cities at Caracol and Cahal Pech; Macal River; Mountain Pine Ridge; Elijio Panti National Park; Belize Zoo and Tropical Conservation Center.

- Prerequisites: ENV 395A Eco-tourism, Agriculture, and Conservation in the Caribbean; ENV 395L Neotropical Environments in the spring 2026 semester
- Course Requirements: Field-based Research Project, active participation, and post-program assessment.
- Anticipated Number of Students: 12
- Estimated Program Fee: $3,700
- Program Fee Includes: Round-trip airfare from Miami International Airport (MIA), tuition, housing, meals, program administration, on-site activities, on-site transportation, and emergency insurance.
- Visa: Not required for U.S. citizens
- Special Notifications: Students should be prepared for substantial walking and uneven ground or pavement (and some more strenuous hiking), some of which require the use of stairs. Students with sensitivity to seasickness or motion sickness should be prepared. Students with restricted diets or allergies have limited food options available. No air conditioning.
