What You Will Learn as an Economics Major
The Economics Department’s faculty embrace the college’s mission and work to ensure that you will be equipped with the practical tools and liberal arts values that will make you thrive as a global citizen and a responsible leader, while pursuing a meaningful life and a productive career. The Department emphasizes economic education in context, as is evident in the major and minor we offer and in the diversity of our courses.
Global Citizenship
Many of the courses you will take have an international focus and emphasize examining economic theories and policy proposals in order to solve economic problems from multiple perspectives. In this way, you will gain a deep understanding of the world that will prepare you for the arena of global citizenship, where working collaboratively on problems from multiple perspectives is essential. You will also be encouraged to study abroad, and to facilitate your international experience, our department offers a variety of field study courses.
Responsible Leadership
The Department offers many community engagement courses so that you will have the opportunity to be civically engaged, preparing you to become a responsible and ethical leader. In the past students have partnered with a number of organizations including Ten Thousand Villages, Winter Park High School, Catholic Charities and the Farm Worker Association of Apopka.
Productive Careers
As a major, you will be prepared for a variety of professions and a satisfying personal life. The major is not designed as a pre-professional program in economics but it offers curricular pathways, mostly in mathematics, for you to continue in graduate economic studies if that is your wish.
Meaningful Lives
The Department of Economics understands economics as one of the social sciences and situates the curriculum and courses in that context, making it inherently interdisciplinary. To this end we offer a structured major and minor that include core courses, prerequisites, and a senior capstone course for the major, as is standard for our discipline in almost all colleges. You will come out of the program with strong writing, oral communication and analytic skills that prepare you for lifelong learning and a meaningful life, as well as a productive career.
