Before coming to Rollins, Makayle Kellison ’25 didn’t know much about physics. Now she’s a published scholar in the field thanks to research she conducted alongside physics professor Whitney Coyle. The topic? Acoustics. The subject? The recent historic launch of the Artemis I rocket.
Watching the spacecraft take off toward the moon just 11 miles from Kennedy Space Center, Kellison was among the closest to the launch site as she worked to collect data on the impact of its sound. This experience has not only crystallized a growing passion in the physics major to understand the way the world works, but it also helped land her a spot in a prestigious program funded by the National Science Foundation at Brigham Young University, which helped her earn a Goldwater Scholarship, the country's most prestigious undergraduate award for the STEM fields.
