Academic Advising at Rollins College is an intentional, collaborative relationship facilitated by our outstanding faculty. We believe the faculty-student advising relationship is essential to students’ ability to reach their goals and to make meaning of their liberal arts education. Purpose Statement
At Rollins, Academic Advising is a dynamic, developmental decision-making process that assists students in clarifying long-term goals and developing educational plans for the realization of those goals. The process empowers students to become responsible for their own education and to make viable academic decisions regarding their future.
In the advising relationship, students realize their maximum educational potential through ongoing communication and information exchanges with their advisor. In this interactive partnership, the advisor serves as facilitator, teacher, mentor, and guide, and shares responsibility for enhancing student success.
Goals of the Advising Relationship
- Student and faculty advisor are in an intentional collaborative relationship.
- Students can identify and explain their short-term and long-term goals.
- Students can explain how their education plan (liberal arts education, major/minor and co-curricular learning) supports the realization of their individual career and life goals.
- Students will understand the process of advising sessions and the defined roles of an advisor and an advisee.
- Students will have an effective plan which allows them to reach their goals.
Faculty Advisor Role
- To foster an intentional collaborative responsive relationship.
- To engage students in identifying and working towards their short-term and long-term goals.
- To mentor and guide students as they work toward becoming empowered graduates who pursue meaningful lives and productive careers.
- To be competent and knowledgeable of the curriculum, campus policies, and student resources.
- To be respectful and inclusive.
- To be prepared to skillfully discuss the student’s career goals, curricular interests, and personal growth.
Student Advisee Role
- To engage an intentional collaborative responsive relationship.

- To be an active learner and collect all information needed to make informed decisions.
